Asthma symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and a persistent cough can limit daily activities. In some chronic lung conditions, the airways stay inflamed and narrow. Salmeterol + Fluticasone is used to help prevent these symptoms. It combines two medicines in one inhaler: Salmeterol, a long-acting bronchodilator that keeps airways open, and Fluticasone, a corticosteroid that reduces airway inflammation. Use it regularly as prescribed; it is not for quick relief during an attack.

What Salmeterol + Fluticasone is (brief)

Salmeterol + Fluticasone is a prescription inhaler that blends two medicines in one device. Salmeterol helps keep airways open for up to about 12 hours; Fluticasone lowers inflammation in the airways. Together, they are used as a maintenance treatment to prevent symptoms in chronic lung conditions.

What it is used for (moderate)

It is used regularly to prevent asthma symptoms in people who still have symptoms despite using an inhaled steroid alone. It is also used for some people with COPD to reduce flare-ups and improve breathing. This medication is not for treating a sudden asthma attack or COPD flare; use it exactly as your doctor directs for daily control.

Contraindications, precautions, and side effects

Do not use Salmeterol + Fluticasone if you are allergic to salmeterol, fluticasone, or any ingredient in the inhaler. Do not use it during a severe asthma attack or COPD flare, or if you need immediate relief. Do not use if you have a milk protein allergy, since some inhalers contain lactose as a carrier. If you have an active infection in the lungs or airways, tell your clinician before use.

Use with caution in children and teens. Long-term inhaled steroids can slow growth a little; your doctor will weigh benefits and risks. Rinse your mouth or gargle after each use to reduce the chance of oral thrush and hoarseness. If you have glaucoma, osteoporosis, or a history of cataracts, discuss long-term steroid use with your doctor. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice, especially if you have been using a steroid inhaler, as stopping abruptly can cause symptoms to worsen.

Common side effects include throat irritation, hoarseness, cough, and oral thrush (a white patch in the mouth). Headache is also common. In COPD, there may be an increased risk of pneumonia. Some people notice a faster heartbeat or tremor. If you develop severe swelling, trouble breathing, or a sudden rash, seek urgent medical help. Always tell your clinician about any side effects that bother you or persist.

Interactions with other substances

Tell your clinician about all medicines you take. Beta-blockers (used for high blood pressure or heart problems) can lessen how well Salmeterol works. Non‑selective beta-blockers should be avoided unless your doctor says it is okay.

Strong inhibitors of the enzyme CYP3A4, such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, or cobicistat, can raise the amount of Salmeterol and Fluticasone in your body and increase side effects. Your doctor may adjust the dose or choose a different medicine if you take these.

Medications that affect adrenaline systems, like monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or certain antidepressants, can raise heart rate and blood pressure when used with beta-agonists. If you take these, tell your clinician before starting Salmeterol + Fluticasone.

Diuretics (water pills) can lower potassium and may increase heart rhythm changes when used with Salmeterol. If you use a diuretic, your doctor may monitor you closely.

Always share details of all medicines, including over‑the‑counter products and supplements, so your doctor can check for interactions and safe use.
