What is Betahistine?

Betahistine, known as betahistine dihydrochloride in tablet form, is a medicine used to treat vertigo linked to Menière's disease. It is a histamine-like compound designed to support inner ear function. In online pharmacies, it is listed as a treatment option for balance problems and spinning sensations that affect daily life.

How does it work?

The exact mechanism is not fully understood, but Betahistine acts on histamine receptors in the brain and inner ear. It is considered an H3 receptor antagonist and can increase the release of histamine in the labyrinth. This may widen small blood vessels and boost blood flow to the inner ear, helping to stabilize balance and reduce dizziness for some people.

Who may benefit

Betahistine is prescribed mainly for adults with vertigo symptoms from Menière's disease. It is not a universal remedy for all dizziness. Your clinician will assess your symptoms, medical history and other medicines to decide if Betahistine is suitable for you. Inform them about pregnancy, nursing, kidney or liver problems, and any allergies.

Dosage and administration

Typical doses range from 8 to 16 mg, taken two or three times daily with meals. Some people start at 8 mg three times daily and adjust as needed. Do not crush or chew tablets unless your pharmacist says it is OK. Take Betahistine regularly for best effect, not just during flare-ups. It can take several weeks to notice a clear improvement in balance.

Safety, side effects and interactions

Most people tolerate Betahistine well. Common side effects include headache, mild stomach upset or nausea, and dry mouth. Less often, people report dizziness or sleepiness. Severe allergic reactions are rare. Avoid if you are allergic to Betahistine. Pregnancy and breastfeeding require medical advice. Discuss all medicines you take, including vitamins or herbal products, as Betahistine can interact with others in some cases.

Practical notes for online pharmacy customers

Order only from reputable pharmacies with clearly labeled products and visible expiration dates. Read the patient leaflet for dosing instructions and safety notes. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is near the next dose time. Do not double up. Store in a cool, dry place away from children. If you experience any worrying effects, contact a healthcare professional promptly.

Monitoring and follow-up

During treatment, your clinician may schedule follow-ups to evaluate response and any side effects. If vertigo persists after several weeks, dose adjustments or alternative options may be considered. Do not stop Betahistine abruptly without medical advice, and report any new health changes promptly.
